Virtual Revolution

Virtual Revolution

From the programme it revealed loads of benefits and also limitation about how the internet has revolutionised the world. Some of the points mentioned is Wikipedia.

The programme mentioned how Wikipedia tranformed the way people receive news and has made our knowledge about information about the world much greater. The benefits of Wikipedia mentioned were:

It gives us people power because viewers now has the power to edit the info to update it on later events.
There also are over 14 million articles which gives viewers a variety of news to view everything that interest them

However, some of the negatives expressed was the accuracy of the site. The site allows viewers to edit the information, and therefore poses the risk of unriable information. Thus, New York writer Lee Segiel 'Loaths' the website.

Later on in the film, we are introduced to 'The well', one of the oldest virtual communities, founded by Stewart Brand and John Perry Barlow In this segement of the clip, they introduce the declaration of independence of cyberspace, which dictates that the government should 'leave us alone' and that 'self expression should have no limits'

The topic of freedom of expression and blgos is further explored while interviewing Al Gore, the 45th president of America. During this interview he talks about the exploration of 'better ideas' via blogging. The idea of giving people a voice is shown through the example of the Kenyan elections in 2007 and the making of Ushahidi, and website to give the people of Kenya a platform to voice their opinions.

The man who created the world wide web, Tim Berners Lee is also interviewed and informs us about the difference between the net and the web. The access and information on the internet is so useful that a Kenyan famer uses it to check market prices. Tim Berners also discusses how the web allows you to blog about your day to day experiences and the programme mentioned Ushahidi. This example was given because a Kenyan women was blogging about the Kenyan civil war while she was experiencing it. This gave people who wasn't involved and couldnt experience it the opportuntity witness her experrience.
